Butterfly IQ Scanner - Iphone Based ultra sound scanner to detect cancer

A new, iPhone-based portable ultrasound machine that can help locate cancer easily in the home was developed by American researchers.

The device called Butterfly IQ is a scanner of size of an electric razor that can display black and white body images, combined with an iPhone.

Developed by the Butterfly Net with Connecticut Starter, the pocket-sized device works by shooting sound in the body and capturing echoes. Usually, the sound waves are generated by a vibrating crystal. But Butterfly's machine uses 9,000 small drums engraved on a semiconductor chip, the MIT Technology Review reported on Friday.

Earlier this year, John Martin, a vascular surgeon based in the United States. US And Butterfly Network's medical director, he discovered a cancerous mass in his throat while testing the device.

Martin felt an unpleasant feeling in his throat, then took off some gel and passed the probe into his neck. The black and gray images quickly appeared on the smartphone to which the device is connected.

He found a mass of 3 cm which has been diagnosed as squamous cell cancer, a form of skin cancer that develops in the cells of the outer layer of the skin.

Instead of vibrate crystals, IQ butterfly uses "ultra-thin capacitive micro-processed transducers" or CMUTs, small pingers layers into a little more than a semiconductor chip chip. "The device gives you the ability to do anything near the bed: you can pull yourself out of your pocket and scan the whole body," Martin said.

The company now plans to combine the instrument with artificial intelligence software that could help a novice to position the probe, collect the correct images and interpret them.

2018, the software will allow users to automatically calculate the amount of blood they are pumping a heart, or detect problems such as aortic aneurysms, according to the report.

IQ Butterfly is the first solid state ultrasonic machine to reach the US market. The company plans to go on sale this year for $ 1.999, far less than any other model on the market.
